BENGALURU, India: Fresh from the successful conduct of Yovela 2014 (Hebrew meaning for Rejoice), a youth camp for Bengaluru Diocese Youth Movement (MGOCYM) from November 14-16, the youngsters are all gearing up towards the next major Christmas carol event, Zamar.

Diocese Metropolitan HG Dr Abraham Mar Seraphim is full of enthusiasm post-Yovela. The Metropolitan in his candid posting on Facebook adds: “The youth camp touched and changed the life styles of youngsters. It was really a spiritual experience at Yovela. I thank God for providing another opportunity to be with the young ones from our Diocese. Christ loves you, Church needs you and I will be with you as your spiritual father. I pray to God to continue to help all of us to focus our lives on God and His Kingdom.”

OCP News Service – 27/2/15

India/Kerala/Kottayam: The recent session of the Holy Episcopal Synod of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church has urged unity and reconciliation with the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch and All East. The Synod stated that peace should aim at bringing the disintegrated faithful together in communion and love.

The Church Synod also welcomed the call by His Holiness Ignatius Aphrem II – Patriarch of Antioch and All East for unity and peace in Malankara which was made during the Apostolic visit to India in February 2015. The unity and reconciliation between two Orthodox fractions in Malankara is the most important factor.

A protocol is required for peace, hence both fractions should respect the verdict of the 1995 Supreme Court along with the Malankara Church constitution of 1934 which has been ratified accepted by the Supreme Court. Peace should be within the frame work of 1934 constitution and 1995 verdict. Only then there shall be continuity and legality for lasting peace.

The Synod also stated that the Patriarch of Antioch should also recognize and accept the 1995 verdict and 1934 constitution which will lead to dialouge and reconciliation.

Malankara Orthodox Church observes ‘Cyber Fast’ on Good Friday

3/3/15

The Ministry of Human Empowerment, of the Malankara Orthodox Church launched this year’s project ‘NERVAZHY’ for providing a balanced media literacy to modern families. Under this project the Ministry initiates to observe April 3, 2015(Good Friday) as ‘Cyber Fast Day’. Just as we abstain from delicious food and avoid all non-veg items during the lent, we need to abstain from the glittering and addictive modern media for a day.

His Holiness the Catholicos has exhorted the believers to disconnect themselves from TV, Computer, Mobiles, Facebook, Whats App, LinkedIn and Twitter for 24 hours on 3rd April 2015 (Good Friday). This is a symbolic action to reduce our excessive dependence on the modern media.

Stigmata – Human Obsession for Signs and Wonders

Jaise Achen-Admn

Fr. Jaise K. George- March 2015
Email: frjaise@gmail.com

Many of you might have heard the news of a baby in Philippines, born with the stigmata of Jesus that became viral in the social media. While we want to know whether this is a hoax or not, we have seen similar phenomenon earlier. St. Francis of Assisi was the first recorded stigmatic in Christian history. Later, Christian history records many number of comparable occurrences. Mother Susan, a nun of the Indian Malankara Orthodox Church, residing in Kerala is also experiencing this.

Stigmata refer to the wounds of Jesus that are miraculously reproduced in the body. On very rare occasions, the Roman Catholic Church has accepted an occurrence of the stigmata as authentic, but has never defined their origin or nature, thus allowing physical, psychological, and preternatural explanations for these phenomena. Ian Wilson, in Stigmata (Harper & Row, San Francisco), declares, “They [stigmata] are one of the most baffling and intriguing of medical and scientific mysteries.”

It is possible that people had unusual wounds or blood blisters in places on their body that could be related to certain wounds of Christ. But each of these cases would need to be rationally explained. Are the wounds real or forged? Do they match the wounds of Christ or is this a product of imagination or self-inflicted? Are they natural or divine? Could they be the product of satanic activity? (We sometimes forget that Satan uses religion to draw people away from what is important). The question to ask is, how blood spots mysteriously appearing on someone’s hands is an evidence of ‘sharing in the suffering of Christ’. Does appearance of marks signify that the bearer is taking part in the suffering? If anything, these oddities minimize suffering. Obviously, there are few answers we can give or find about the stigmata.

We can only speculate and not be certain how the ‘stigmata’-wounds of the Passion looked on Christ’s body. But we do know that stigmata appear the same in all who are believed to have had them. Joe Nickell, a former detective and magician, investigates claims of the supernatural and paranormal for Skeptical Inquirer magazine, based in Amherst wrote a book on this topic in 1993. “Jesus most likely was nailed to the cross through his wrists. Once the notion that Jesus was nailed through the wrists became accepted, some stigmatics began to display wrist wounds. Here is my logic: Stigmata are supposed to be a reflection of the wounds of Christ, whatever those were like. If these were true manifestations, they ought to tell us where the wounds were,” Nickell said. Instead, stigmata appear “all over the place. There’s every kind of variant, and they keep changing.”

The evidence available is scanty with much of it supplied by supporters of stigmata. We do not see Stigmata mentioned in the bible. However, most of the occurrences started around 1200 years after the death of Christ, and there is a strong argument that it is a product of the superstitions in the darkness of the middle Ages. The Church is cautious about reported instances of the stigmata for two reasons: the possibility of a hoax (and thus all faith in God might seem questionable) and the possibility that some people could distort the meaning of the stigmata. For example, these marks might appear more central to a person’s faith than the passion-death-resurrection of Jesus, the Scriptures, the sacraments or many other things that are more central to faith than the stigmata are.

Researchers of stigmata, even Roman Catholic believers like the late Herbert Thurston, S.J., almost unanimously agree that such phenomena are best explained as bodily reactions to intense ecstatic and psychological experiences. The film- ‘Stigmata’, one of the most controversial religious movies, released in the year 1999 was highly controversial due to the manner in which it dealt with issues close to Roman Catholic’s hearts. A Jesuit priest, one of the main characters of this film, discovers a connection between the stigmata and one of the Gnostic Gospels (4th century religious writings condemned by the Roman Catholic Church). The priest uncovers a plot to keep the gospels “truth” concealed.

Some modern researches has showed stigmata are of hysterical origin, or linked to dissociative identity disorders, especially the link between dietary constriction by self-starvation, dissociative mental states and self-mutilation, in a religious belief. Anorexia nervosa cases often display self-mutilation like stigmata as part of a ritualistic, obsessive-compulsive disorder. A relationship between starvation and self-mutilation has been reported amongst prisoners of war and during famines. A psychoanalytic study of stigmatic Therese Neumann has suggested that her stigmata resulted from post-traumatic stress symptoms expressed in unconscious self-mutilation through abnormal autosuggestibility.

BIBLICAL VERSES FOR CONSIDERATION:

“You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.” Leviticus 19:28. It could be said that stigmata are cuttings in the flesh, which seems to contradict God’s command.

One verse sometimes referred to by people who want to defend stigmata, is found in Galatians 6:17 Paul wrote: “From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.” The word “mark” comes from the Greek word “stigma” which means a tattooed mark, or mark burned in by a brand. Now we know that it was against God’s law to mark one’s own body with cuttings, so Paul would not have inflict them on himself, so what did he mean?

It was common in Paul’s day for slaves and sometimes soldiers to be branded, and followers of the cult of Mithra were also branded. In later times, the followers of Hinduism marked themselves with the trident of Vishnu. The mark or brand signified ownership, a scar of service and the initiate usually bore it proudly. But in the context in which Paul is writing, he is making a defense to the Judaizer, who practiced circumcision, and he refers to his own physical sufferings which he had had to endure for the sake of the Lord Jesus. These, he says, are his stigma, or branding. The scars, scratches, and bruises in his body are proof of His ownership.

The Amplified Bible says: “From now on let no person trouble me (by making it necessary to vindicate my apostolic authority and the divine truth of my Gospel), for I bear on my body the (brand) marks of the Lord Jesus (the wounds, scars, and other outward evidence of persecutions – these testify to His ownership of me)!”

MY PERSONAL VIEWS AND THOUGHTS:

I am sure that stigmata exist as real wounds in some people’s bodies. I also believe visions, apparitions, signs and wonders have been seen and experienced by many people down through the ages and that stigmata are just one of hundreds of other similar marvels. However, it is not the authenticity of stigmata that should be our main interest; it is what these wonders are pointing to. The devil is able to perform signs and wonders too, for example, the wizards of Egypt were able to turn water into blood, as well as Moses, but the wizards were pointing away from God, and were fighting against Moses.

The Bible depicts that Jesus came to the world and gave His life as the ultimate sacrifice. Nothing can be added to or taken from the one great sacrifice. On the other hand, Stigmata is challenging the finality of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ because it seem to be extending it, and repeating it at least in some measure. It would therefore seem that, despite their absolute sincerity, those who manifest stigmata are not being worked on by the power of God. They are manifesting lying wonders with their force being either demonic or psychosomatic, or a combination of both. We would do far better if we put our trust in the finished work of Jesus than seek after people who seem to be in a state of crucifixion all over again. No one could bear the sins of the world except Jesus. It is futile to even imagine bearing those sins in our own body, and a great insult to God to think that we could HELP Him with the redemption of the world.

The media are always looking for ordinary people doing extraordinary things. And it is no surprise how the news about Jejomar Castillo, baby with stigmata of Jesus born on March 15 in Philippines went viral. We have entered the second half of the Great Lent; we meditate and reflect on the sufferings of Jesus Christ. This is a time when we are doing an unusually amazing job, staying focused but newsflash like this are too tempting. It is imperative we should keep our focus on the Cross. Can we compare anything with the sufferings and wounds inflicted on Christ? Can any human being share the pain Christ suffered for us? That is why our father in Christ, St. Thomas who proclaimed the faith in the resurrected Christ demanded to “see in his hands the print of the nails, and put his finger into the print of the nails, and thrust his hand into Jesus’ side (John 20:25)”. For a believer, these are personal marks of the identification of our Lord Jesus Christ who died for us on the Cross. I, as a believer, cannot find the same wounds in anyone or anywhere.

I pray for baby Jejomar’s speedy recovery but am greatly saddened by the so called believers’s responses: “Welcome to the Saviour”, “biblical return of Jesus Christ”. Holy Scripture reminds “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? “(Gal 3:1). This verse compels us to ponder if we wish to be foolish like the Galatians and be infatuated by events such as stigmata or we rekindle our faith in Christ, Our Saviour.

Christians must not waste time or devotion dwelling on miracles and wonders. These ‘stigmata wounds’ does not move me or ‘strengthen’ my faith in Christ, but I am stirred by martyrdom of the 21 Coptic Orthodox young men and the sufferings of the 72 year old sister who was ganged raped in Bengal, examples of true believers taking part in the suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Let signs and wonders spark valuable conversation rather than being the manifestations of spiritual realities. Let us be filled with the Holy Spirit leading us into a life of holy living, not be in a state of awe and reverence for the occurrences of body marks corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ.

FB Page of the Metropolitan here:

AHMEDABAD/INDIA — International Yoga Day is being celebrated on June 21, Sunday. The Diocese of Ahmedabad of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church joins the Government of India in celebrating Day.

Diocese Metropolitan HG Pulikkottil Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios, has in a release stated that yoga is one of the best contribution of India to the world. “The Indian Orthodox Church is proud to share its lineage with yoga and uses this opportunity to raise awareness of the highly integrated indigenous character of the Orthodox Church of India.”
Further, Dr Mar Yulios reiterates that the “Church understands Yoga as a spiritual exercise to instill in its practitioners awareness, tolerance, empathy, compassion and most importantly the inter-connectedness of God’s creation.”

The release also adds that Yoga is a powerful science for inner-transformation, scientifically designed, practiced and propagated by great people like sage Patanjali, the Father of Modern Yoga, in his ancient book, Yoga-Sutra.

Dr Mar Yulios further points out that yoga is neither owned by nor aligned with any particular religion at all. “It is the common wealth of our culture and followers of any or every religion can benefit from its practices. It works as a necessary tool for all seekers.”

The Diocese of Ahmedabad has been conducting Yoga classes and providing special training to students and teachers in its schools under the Diocese for a long time.

“In our hospitals and health centres, Yoga is an inevitable part of our holistic health therapy. Yoga is a reputed scientific method for the well-being of humanity and has nothing to do with religious fundamentalism. However, no one should be compelled to practice yoga, rather it is a free choice like taking any other medical treatment,” the release concludes.

Mother of the poor, Teresa of Calcutta (1910 -1997) is well-known to all. There is no need for any introduction or explanation of her life and work. People from all walks of life revere Mother Teresa and her missionary works in India. Many Orthodox Christians love and admire her. At the same time, Orthodox Christian forget to talk about two legendary missionaries who lived and worked in India. They are Metropolitan Alvares Julius (Oriental Orthodox) and Mother Graveliea (Eastern Orthodox).

The Missionary life of Metropolitan Alvares Julius (1836 –1923)
Alvares Julius of Goa was a former Roman Catholic priest who reunited with the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church. He is known as the ‘Apostle of Charity’. He was a true missionary champion who established several Orthodox Missions in Goa, North East India, South Indi a and Sri Lanka. He had a reach even to UK and Europe. He took care of poor and the sick. The Bishop was a great educator, social worker, and philanthropist. He started a number of newspapers and magazines, published many books and generated awareness among the people of Goa on the bad effects of contagious diseases. In Panaji, Goa he ran a house for poor destitute as well as leprosy and tuberculosis patients. There is an interesting incident that happened in the life of Metropolitan Alvares. Once Metropolitan Alvares begged in front of a shopkeeper for contributions and the angry shopkeeper spat on his bowl. –Alvares said, “All right, I shall keep this for me. Now, give something for the poor.” This response made the shopkeeper in contributing  generously. He lived as a beggar, he lived for Christ, he lived for the poor and less privileged ones.

The Missionary Life of Mother Graveliea (1897-1992)
Born as Avrilia Papayanni in Constantinople 1897, her family moved to Thessaloniki in 1923. She got trained as chiropodist and physiotherapist in England. She also opened her own clinic in Athens. After her mum’s death, she moved to India to work for the poor and sick. Elder Graviela lived a simple life and also served at Baba Amte’s Anandwan (Caring institution for Leprosy Patients) several years taking care of leprosy patients. Gravilea was among the first foreign workers to serve at the institution. A disciple of Swami Sivananda of Hrishikesh, she was known by the name Sister Leela to the inmates of Anandwan. She lived simple and devoted her life for the sick and poor. Sister Graviela was a good friend of Fr Lazarus Moore, the great Orthodox Missionary Champion, who took care of the families of the sick and downtrodden in India and several other parts of the world.

Treating Indira Gandhi
The then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi was suffering from shoulder and neck pain. She consulted several doctors and tried numerous medicines with no success. Finally, she consulted Sister Graviela. Sister Gravelia applied her physiotherapy skills on the great leader of India. Indira felt much better. The Prime Minister was at peace from the long-time pain. At the same time, she was astonished by the treating skills of this simple Orthodox Christian nun. Indira thanked Mother and said, “You have fairy hands.” Indira was pretty impressed with the psychotherapy skills of Mother Gabrielia. Mother Gabriellia used to visit the office of the iconic Indian leader. Their friendship was precious by all means. Their story is mentioned the book ‘Mother Gavrilia: The Ascetic of Love.’ But their relationship remains unknown to many people.

Unknown Missionaries of Charity and Love
Unfortunately, Metropolitan Alvares Julius and Mother Graviela remains unknown to many people in Indian and abroad. They have never received worldwide recognition like Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Some experts have even commented that many activities of Mother Teresa were modelled upon the Charity and Missionary works of Metropolitan Alvares Julius. Am not sure whether Mother Teresa knew Metropolitan Julius or Elder Graviela. Unlike Mother Teresa, Alvares Julius and Graviela did not have financial, material, religious or political back up. Their sacrifice for Christ and the poor remains buried deep inside somewhere. Mother Teresa did something others could not do, she was a person who lived for and with the poor. But neither Elder Graviela nor Metropolitan Alvares did anything less than that of Mother Teresa. The world should know their pious act of love, charity, and human service.

Orthodox Christians has a great responsibility to promote Metropolitan Alvares and Mother Graviela. Unfortunately due to the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox divisions, lack of a common platform for Orthodox churches and lack of unified promotions, these two great personalities remain unknown to most of the people. The Oriental Orthodox Christians have not shown that much of interest in Mother Graviela as she belonged to Eastern Orthodox Communion and Eastern Orthodox faithful seems to be less interested with Metropolitan Alvares as he belonged to Oriental Orthodox Communion. Above all these factors, the most important aspect is that both personalities were not given worldwide coverage by Orthodox Churches nor the international media. The first step should come from Orthodox Church. The push should come from their respective Orthodox jurisdictions and should be circulated on global secular and non-secular platforms.

The legacy of Metropolitan Alvares was not taken care until recent times. In 2015, the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church declared him as a regional saint. Reports from Greece says that Mother Graveila shall be canonised. She remains well-known in Greece and some Eastern Orthodox circles but I doubt her fame beyond that. Metropolitan Alvares is not known beyond the Indian and Syriac Orthodox circles, not even among the entire Oriental Orthodox communion. This is the case with many of the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox missionary champions and saints. St Francis Xavier, St Francis of Assisi and St. Therese of Lisieux (St. Little Teresa) are widely known among the Orthodox faithful and the public, thanks to the enormous financial, social and political influence of Vatican.

It is not about creating personality cults, but it is all about propagating the goodness and love of these two revered people. If Mother Teresa is known worldwide, then why not Metropolitan Alvares and Mother Graveila?

Indian Orthodox Church Sents Letter to Pope, Major Archbishop, & Roman Catholic Prelates:
http://theorthodoxchurch.info/blog/news/?p=1372

Kerala-India: As per the MCYM (Malankara Catholic Youth Movement) Fb group, twenty-five families from Indian Orthodox Malankara Church (Catholicate of the East), Syriac Orthodox Church in India (Patriarchate of Antioch & All East) the Independent Thozhiyoor Church (former Oriental Orthodox Church) ‘reunited’ with the Malankara Catholic Rite in India (One of the Eastern Catholic Rites under the Roman Pope which split from the Indian Orthodox Malankara  Church in  the 1930’s under Archbishop Ivanios). The so-called ‘reunion’ event took place on 26th March 2016, St. George Malankara Catholic Church in Kunnamkulam area (Kerala). The event was presided by Most. Rev Abraham Mar Yulios (Malankara Catholic Bishop of Movathupuzha).

The news is a shocker to the two ancient Orthodox Churches in India who are still in administrative schism.

The concept of ‘Uniatism or Eastern Catholicism’ is rejected by Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches. It is a false way of union between Orthodox Churches and the Roman Catholic Church.

After the Second Vatican Council, the Roman Catholic Church recognized that the unity with the Orthodox world should come through dialogue and not through conversion of people, communities from Orthodox to the Eastern Catholicism. This was clearly stated in the recent joint declaration between Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and Pope Francis of in Cuba.

The Joint declaration says that “It is today clear that the past method of ‘Uniatism,’ understood as the union of one community to the other, separating it from its Church, is not the way to re-establish unity.” But equally important to the Vatican and to Greek Catholics is the acknowledgement by the patriarch of the right of these churches “to exist and to undertake all that is necessary to meet the spiritual needs of their faithful.” (www.ncronline.org).

Hence, the so-called ‘reunion’ of 25, Indian Orthodox and Syriac Orthodox families to theMalankara Catholic Uniate Rite is a total breach of the existing practice in the Roman Catholic church and a disrespect to the ecumenical relations between Vatican and the Oriental Orthodox world.

If anyone wants to join the Roman Catholic Church, he or she is free to do the same, but using Uniatism as a tool to absorb Orthodox faithful to Roman Catholicism is an absolute violation of the existing understanding and practises.

Apart from these of incidents, the Malankara Catholic Rite continue to provoke the Indian Orthodox Church in many ways. Their Primate Major Archbishop Baselios Cleemis claims himself the Catholicos, Malankara Metropolitan & successor to the Throne of St. Thomas, a title which is exclusive to the Primate of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church.

Reunion through Uniatism (Sheep stealing) and ecumenism cannot go hand in hand. Apart from the Catholic annual Roman Catholic-Oriental Orthodox ecumenical consolations, the Roman church organize separate dialogues with Indian and Syriac Orthodox Churches in India. The same Roman church uses UNIATES /Eastern Catholicism as a tool to steal Orthodox faithful in India. The Syriac and Indian Orthodox Churches should move out of the ecumenical dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church and should give prime importance in resolving all existing issues between them.

Ecumenism is good and Christian unity is very important, but it should be practised with mutual respect and considering all existing agreements.

India- Kerala: Another Historical event took place in Malankara (Kerala) at the St. John’ s Great Church (Valiya Palli) on the 23rd of April 2016. After completing the renovation works, Syriac Orthodox (Jacobite) and Malankara Orthodox (Indian Orthodox) prelates jointly re-consecrated the ancient Church which was originally built in the year 1861.

Additional Note:
Syriac Orthodox Church and the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church have been in administrative schism for a very long time. Apostolic visit of Patriarch Aphrem II to Malankara (Kerala in February 2015) , resulted in a warm exchange of greetings between the two churches. The Yerevan meeting between the Syriac and Indian Orthodox Primates (April 2015) was another turning point in restoring conciliar unity between the two ancient sister Orthodox churches.

OCP Chancellor Slams Vatican Ecumenism & Uniate Movement- http://theorthodoxchurch.info/blog/news/ocp-chancellor-slams-vatican-ecumenism-uniate-movement/

Kerala: A visit by Cardinal Cleemis, Major Archbishop of the Malankara Catholic Church (An Eastern Catholic Rite in communion with the Pope of Rome, that broke away from the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church in 1930 under the leadership of Archbishop Ivanios) to the Orthodox Monastery of Bethany  provoked several Malankara Orthodox faithful. Cardinal took part in the evening prayer at the tomb of Malankara Orthodox Church fathers. Orthodox faithful in Facebook and other social media have slammed the incident. Some commented that the Cardinal can be welcomed at the monastery, but should have been prevented from taking  part in the evening prayer, whereas others totally objected his visit.

The Malankara Catholic Rite and the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church have a ‘complex historical’ relationship. The original Bethany Monastery was established by Archbishop Ivanios (while he was a priest of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church). He was ordained as a Metropolitan by Catholicos Baselios Geevarghese I of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church.

The Monastery religious order is known by the name ‘Order of the Imitation of Christ’ (O.I.C.). Presently the original Monastery of Bethany is under the control of O.I.C of the Malankara Orthodox Church, whereas the OIC of Malankara Catholic Rite established a separate Bethany monastery in the nearby area.

Malankara Catholic Rite Continue to Provoke the Indian Church
In the month of Aril 2016, twenty-five families from Indian Orthodox Malankara Church (Catholicate of the East), Syriac Orthodox Church in India (Patriarchate of Antioch & All-East) the Independent Thozhiyoor Church (former Oriental Orthodox Church) ‘reunited’ with the Malankara Catholic Rite, which is a total breach of the existing practice in the Roman Catholic Church and a disrespect to the ecumenical relations between Vatican and the Oriental Orthodox world.

Major Archbishop Baselios Cleemis claimed himself to be the Malankara Metropolitan & Successor to the Throne of St. Thomas (published in their official website), a title which is exclusive to the Primate of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church. Lately, they have halted the usage of such titles. The irony is that, official websites of Vatican & the Holy See of the Roman Catholic Church do not mention the title  ‘Catholicos’ for Cardinal Baselios Cleemis. The title given is ‘His Beatitude Cardinal Baselios Cleemis – Major Archbishop of Trivandrum for Syro-Malankaras‘( Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal, Title of San Gregorio VII).
